Abstract

The monetary medals minted in Bolivia between the years 1825 and 1873 were presented to social elements particularly close to the ruling powers, especially military officers and civilian personnel of middling and high rank. This explains why these special issues depict complex legitimist discourses different from that shown on standard coins. While all these monetary discourses are of interest, the use of the mythology of Hercules and Jupiter by President Manuel Isidoro Belzú (1848-1855) stands out from the rest. It follows French models, and, after them, Belzú was depicted in Caesar-like garb in 1850 and with a monarchist slant since 1852.
