Abstract

In this paper, we study the directive expressions –imperatives, prohibitive subjunctives– of the Euthyphro. We have looked for patterns that can explain the selection in each single case of present or aorist stem. First, we have explored internal distributional features, such as the lexical class of the verb or some characteristics of the complements. None of them appear as capable of explaining all the cases. On the contrary, an analysis of the argumentative structure of the dialogue allows to identify clear patterns of distribution associated to the different types of instructions, depending on whether the directive expression opens a discussion, tries to establish a conclusion etc.
