Nutriendo el futuro: la lactancia materna y el compromiso académico

La lactancia materna, un acto de singular importancia, ocupa un lugar fundamental en la agenda académica y científica de educación en medicina. En este artículo, exploramos una manera de integrar la lactancia materna en el plan de enseñanza de las carreras de medicina.
La leche materna, reconocida por su capacidad para cubrir los requerimientos del recién nacido a término hasta los seis meses, continúa brindando una cantidad sustancial de energía, vitamina A, calcio, riboflavina y otros nutrientes hasta los dos años (1). Más allá de su valor nutricional, la lactancia materna coadyuva en la prevención de patologías tanto en la madre como en el niño, abarcando desde infecciones prevalentes de la infancia hasta enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles, así como cáncer de mama y de ovario (2-4). Además, contribuye significativamente a la reducción de la mortalidad infantil asociada a enfermedades infecciosas (5) y al desarrollo cognitivo del lactante (6, 7).
Para alcanzar el máximo beneficio de la “lactancia materna óptima”, que incluye el inicio temprano (durante la primera hora de vida), la exclusividad durante los primeros seis meses y la continuación hasta los dos años o más (8, 9), es esencial contar con una estrategia integral.
