Abstract

In the present study we shall analyse the Varro’s De lingua Latina (LL), with special emphasis on the way in which the Alexandrian philological branch is included. Our goal is to shed light on the inclusion of the said branch (widely acknowledged by critics) in two separate parts: the treatment received by the poetic text in book VII of LL and the form through which the concept of analogia is integrated in the Varronian theory of the declinatio naturalis. We hope to demonstrate that the idea upheld by Varro departs from a concept in which the critical establishment of the poetic text constitutes an ultimate goal in the Alexandrian fashion in order to enter the linguistic field. In this respect for Varro, poets are impositori and declinatores uoluntarii, that is to say creators of new words. Thus, as far as the concept of analogia is concerned we hope to conclude that it constitutes a metalinguistic term proper to Varro’s theory that expresses the proportional relationship within the Latin language’s system. Finally, the present study proposes to conceive De lingua Latina as an original work, taking this term both in the older sense of the word (going back to the origins of a certain theory, reflexion or production) as well as in a more modern sense (innovation or novelty).
