Estudio sobre el simbolismo sonoro en palabras con la secuencia -γγ- [ŋg] en el griego antiguo

In the Greek lexical inventory there is a group of words that apart from sharing the sequence of velar nasal voiced consonantal sounds [ŋ] + the occlusive voiced velar [g], also alludes to: a) ‘bird names’, b) ‘sound’ or ‘noise’, and c) an ‘instrument producing sound’. Here are some examples: φθόγγος ‘sound’; λίγγω ‘to twang’; φάρυγξ (genitive φάρυγγος) ‘throat’, pharynx’; σῦριγξ (genitive σύριγγος) ‘shepherd’s pipe’, ‘whistle’. Faced with this evidence, the following question arises: Is it possible that the use of this consonantal sequence in such words is the result of a sonorous symbolism by which Greek speakers associated the combination -γγ- [ŋg] with the semantic f ield ‘emission of sound’? Through the presentation of a corpus of words that includes this consonantal sequence and the etymological analysis of these terms, this study aims to present an affirmative answer to this question.
